Welcome! With the following informations we want to give you an overview of our work in Anesthesia. You are in front of a surgury. It's an unusual situation for you but without a reason to worry. Take a few minutes to read the following information. In the department of Anesthesia at the Neuro-Spine-Center every Treatments are accomplished by medical specialists starting with the preliminary talk to the debriefing. Please note: This information is not a replacement of the written education or the education talk with your anaesthesiologist! What does Anesthesia mean? The word Anesthesia (greek) means insensitiveness or numbness. The most used method at the NSC a general anesthesia. The patient will be moved to a simulated sleep. The sensation of pain of the whole body is turned off. The general anesthesia is called TIVA (Total intravenous anesthesia). This modern method of anesthesia avoids the use of gaseous anesthetic. Premedication - preliminary talk with the anaesthesiologist
The premedication talk is for your information and to inform the anaesthesiologist. It makes sure that the anesthesia will be comfortable for you with a highest level of security. To ensure this we need your help. The anaesthesiologist needs a complete and detailed overview of your state of health. To ensure this you receive a question form. These general questions must be all answered during the talk with the anaesthesiologist. The anaesthesiologist will explain the process to you including risks of an anesthesia.
Arrival at the operating theater
The nurses of the station will bring you to the operating theater area. After that the anaesthesiologist and a care helper take care of you. In the preparation room you will be connected with a ECG for monitoring the regularity of the heart. A clip on your finger measures the concentration of oxygen in the blood. Blood pressure is measured with a automatic collar. All important apparatus are monitored by this. Needed medicine is given by an infusion to the forearm.
Starting the anesthesia
Anesthetic is given to the patient by an infusion. The patient felt to sleep smoothly. After the patient felt to sleep the breathing is ensured by a tubus. During the surgery the anesthesia will be keep up by the anaesthesiologist. The apparatus is monitored during the surgery and will be corrected if necessary.
After the surgery
After the surgery the patient will be brought to the anesthetic recovery room and woke up in a short time. This process is supported by a skilled nurse and the anaesthesiologist. Back at the station the anaesthesiologist will do a final examination. The anaesthesiologist will precribe needed medicine for pain treatment from the surgery to the next morning. Normally the patient is able to drink after he is brought back to the station. During the ward round the anaesthesiologist will ask the patient about his well-being and inform the patient about possible disturbances. This is your opportunity to tell us the pro and contras.
